A doula is a trained professional who provides support to a mother and family around childbirth. Unlike a midwife or physician, a doula does not provide medical care; their role is to offer physical comfort, emotional support, and practical guidance through pregnancy, birth, and the period that follows. There are, broadly, two kinds of doula, distinguished by when they help. A postpartum doula's role often overlaps with that of a newborn care specialist, though a doula's emphasis tends toward supporting the whole family's adjustment and the mother's recovery, alongside care of the baby.
