Doulas Explained: Labor, Delivery, and Postpartum
Professional support for one of life's most significant passages, before, during, and after birth.
A doula is a trained professional who provides support to a mother and family around childbirth. Unlike a midwife or physician, a doula does not provide medical care; their role is to offer physical comfort, emotional support, and practical guidance through pregnancy, birth, and the period that follows. For many families, a doula's steady, experienced presence makes a profound difference in how they experience one of life's most significant passages.
There are, broadly, two kinds of doula, distinguished by when they help. A birth doula (or labor doula) supports the mother through labor and delivery: offering comfort measures, helping with positioning and breathing, providing reassurance and advocacy, and supporting the partner so they can be present rather than overwhelmed. A birth doula typically meets with the family beforehand to understand their wishes, is on call around the due date, and is present through labor and the birth itself.
A postpartum doula supports the family in the weeks after the baby arrives, a period that can be as demanding as the birth. This may include guidance on newborn care and feeding, helping the mother recover, light support around the home and with the baby so the parents can rest, and an experienced, reassuring presence as the family finds its footing. A postpartum doula's role often overlaps with that of a newborn care specialist, though a doula's emphasis tends toward supporting the whole family's adjustment and the mother's recovery, alongside care of the baby.
Families engage doulas for different reasons: first-time parents wanting experienced guidance, mothers seeking particular support and advocacy through birth, families without nearby family help in the early weeks, or anyone who simply wants knowledgeable, caring support through a vulnerable and transformative time. The value is both practical and emotional, fewer unknowns, more rest, and the calm that comes from having someone experienced alongside you.
Because a doula enters a family's life at an intimate moment, fit and trust matter enormously, and the best doulas combine genuine expertise with warmth and discretion. We place birth and postpartum doulas, alongside newborn care specialists, helping families assemble the right support for the arrival of a child. It is the standard that has defined Nannies + more…® for more than twenty-five years.
